95 years after the varietal’s inception, we present Grand Pinotage: a curated case of six wines featuring the past decades’ most prestigious producers, truly emblematic of South Africa’s legacy. Offering collectors the pinnacle of the variety’s expression, only 500 cases are produced per vintage, making this a rare and limited selection for those in pursuit of the iconic.
Despite the challenging season, this might be the best vintage Beyerskloof has seen in the last 20 years. Avoiding the trap of excessive structure and weight, the wine captures bright black cherry notes, hints of violets, ethereal textures and supple tannins. Precocious but not lush, perfumed yet restrained, it delivers harmony and charm for those impatient to enjoy it now, and promises a great future for those willing to let time work its magic.
Drought conditions meant significantly smaller berries and lower yields, but also even-ripening that resulted in wines with vibrant colour, velvety tannins, and exceptional fruit purity. Black cherry hints accompany the youngberry and blueberry notes, while carefully composed tannins deliver deep, seductive textures.
Dry conditions resulted in small berries delivering depth and structure, while extended hang-time during the cooler harvest period added crisp, natural acidity and balance. The result is a concentrated assemblage of smoky, rich fruit, and a lingering combination of black cherries, caramel, and baked raspberry aromas. This is a wine to savour.
These bush vines adapted well to the dry environment. A smaller crop resulted in wines with excellent fruit concentration, bold tannins and perfect balance. Charismatic and perfectly framed, this wine is savoury yet sweet-fruited with cherry, chocolate and blueberry notes.
A string of dry winters made 2018 the smallest crop in Kaapzicht’s recent memory. Slightly thicker skins mean more pronounced, silkier tannings, with a quality that’s comparable to the finest vintages of the decade. An amalgam of palate weight combined with berry intensity and black cherry fruit, it shows both the hallmark of its terroir and the precision of the winemaker’s aesthetic vision.
Slightly warmer days were balanced by cooler nights, resulting in compact bunches with small, concentrated berries that delivered flavour intensity and finesse. Blueberry, raspberry and blackberry aromas bind into almond-marzipan notes from the perfectly integrated oak, leading into a richly textured, generous palate. The overall result is balanced, enigmatic and harmonious.
"Pure, arresting and focused, the delicately nuanced fruit melds seamlessly into fine, powdery tannins."
