On a quest to find the grape best suited to South African soils, Professor Abraham Perold married Pinot Noir with Hermitage (Cinsault) in 1925 to create Pinotage. What followed was a string of fortunate coincidences: of forgotten seedlings and an unplanned rescue, decades of obscurity followed by sudden prize-winning fame.
